After almost five years of service, Electronic Arts is shutting down its online servers for The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II. While the PC version's servers were taken offline last week, Xbox 360 players have until Jan. 11 to use the game's online services and collect those last remaining Achievements. EA says it has to shut down the servers due to the expiration of the Tolkien license.
But some players say they aren't too pleased with the way it was handled. 'EA shutting Middle-earth down is a real kick in the shins,' said a longtime player named Darkfire in an e-mail to Wired.com. He has played the game for years, he says, and the online modes were 'never inactive, even as the servers shut down.'
